Why not RSVP

Postby Floyd » Fri Nov 07, 2014 5:10 pm

I see a lot of Diffserv PHB in practice, rarely RSVP. What gives?

Howdy Floyd,

RSVP is primarily used for enhanced quality of service in small to medium multimedia environments. While end-to-end signaling, state maintenance and admission control are some of the benefits, the overhead in large environments to ensure each hop along the path is RSVP aware, the additional complexity, client and resource requirements make Diffserv the popular choice.

I agree Tom. Even with some of the RSVP scalability enhancements available like class-based flow matching, proxy RSVP, refresh reduction and aggregation, its a different animal that many are not willing to support.
